The Daily Signal Media Group seeks an experienced journalist to serve as a news reporter covering Virginia state government and politics, ideally from Richmond. This position will focus on delivering accurate and timely reporting on state legislative sessions, policy developments, and political movements in the affect citizens’ daily lives. This is an independent contractor position and does not include benefits.

Position Overview

As a state capital reporter, you will be responsible for producing original news coverage that examines how state government actions and policies impact communities. You will work independently to develop sources, identify newsworthy stories, and deliver compelling content that helps readers understand complex political issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and report on state legislative sessions, committee hearings, and executive actions.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with state legislators, officials, policy experts, and other key sources.
  • Write clear, accurate news stories on tight deadlines about state government activities.
  • Produce in-depth analysis pieces examining major policy initiatives and their implications.
  • Cover breaking political news and developments in the state.
  • Identify emerging trends in state policy and politics that deserve coverage.
  • File public records requests and analyze government documents.
  • Maintain active presence on social media platforms to share stories and engage with readers.
  • Collaborate with editors on story development and editorial planning.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience covering state government and politics
  • Demonstrated track record of breaking news and producing enterprise stories
  • Strong understanding of state legislative process and government operations
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills with meticulous attention to accuracy
  • Ability to translate complex policy issues into clear, engaging stories
  • Experience building and maintaining source networks
  • Proven ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Strong news judgment and ethical standards
  • Proficiency with digital publishing tools and social media platforms
  • Experience covering multiple legislative sessions
  • Knowledge of state Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and open records laws
  • Background in investigative or data journalism
  • Multimedia skills including photography and video production
  • Experience with public records analysis and database research

Location and Schedule

  • Must be based in or willing to travel to Richmond, Virginia
  • Position requires regular presence at state capitol during legislative sessions
  • Flexible schedule with availability for evening/weekend coverage as news warrants

Compensation

  • Competitive contract rate commensurate with experience
