The Marist poll, which was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, finds that sixty-two percent of Americans support “changing laws to allow for some restrictions on abortion,” while 84 percent of Americans do not support abortion on demand up until the birth of the child. Specifically, 28 percent believe that abortion should be legal only in the first three months of a pregnancy, while 33 percent think that abortion should only be legal in cases of rape, incest, and danger to the mother’s life. Eleven percent think that abortion should never be legal.
Over seven in ten Americans back banning abortions after twenty weeks, unless the mother’s life is in danger. Last year, the House voted to ban abortions after twenty weeks. The legislation remains stalled in the senate, despite Sen. Lindsey Graham (R – S.C.) pushing for the legislation.
