Left-wing groups donate to organizations considered Christian in an attempt to control the evangelical vote, says Megan Basham, author of the new book “Shepherds for Sale: How Evangelical Leaders Traded the Truth for a Leftist Agenda.”
“We have to look at the fact that this is rightly called America’s most powerful voting bloc, and they overwhelmingly vote for … things like protecting the unborn, the sanctity of marriage, the biblical definitions of gender—‘man and woman, He created them,’” Basham told The Daily Signal. “And so for very obvious reasons, if you are a secular progressive, you want to find a way to muddy the waters for evangelicals on those issues.”
Basham discussed her book, released Tuesday, which delves into the efforts of far-left donor groups to infiltrate evangelical denominations, publications, organizations, and churches.
Though biblical views of marriage, sexuality, and the sanctity of life are unpopular in today’s culture, the Bible calls Christians to “pick up their cross and to sometimes bear some consequences for doing what’s right,” said Basham, culture reporter for The Daily Wire.
Basham also spoke about the Southern Baptist Convention’s public policy arm, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. Last week, the commission announced both the dismissal and reinstatement of the head of the ERLC, Brent Leatherwood, who took a stance against publication of the transgender Nashville, Tennessee, shooter’s manifesto.
“We know that the ERLC is extremely unpopular among Southern Baptists, which is the largest Protestant denomination in the U.S., and the ERLC is its public voice, its policy lobbying arm,” Basham said. “And when you look at the fact that they are supporting issues like gun control, lax border policies, and some other issues that are not uniformly popular among Southern Baptists, it’s not really that surprising that they’ve become so controversial because they’re doing things in Southern Baptists’ name that a consensus of Southern Baptist don’t necessarily agree with.”
Basham urges Christians to boldly defend the truths of the Bible and stand against those “bad shepherds.”
“Let’s start with being bold about where Scripture does speak on those issues of life, on those issues of sexuality, gender, and marriage,” she said.
