Vice President Kamala Harris would not identify a single restriction on abortion that she supports during a CBS News interview, even though she was given the opportunity several times.
Harris discussed abortion with “Face the Nation” host Margaret Brennan in an interview that aired Sunday.
“What is it that you believe? What week of pregnancy should abortion access to be cut off?” Brennan asked the vice president.
“We need to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade. We’re not trying to do something new,” Harris began, before the CBS host cut her off to point out: “That was nebulous, because it was about [fetal] viability, which could be anywhere between 20 to 24 weeks. That was in the Women’s Health Protection Act that the White House also endorsed.”
“No, no, no, no, no,” responded a ruffled Harris. “Let me be very clear. Let me be very clear. From Day One, the president has been clear. I have been clear. We need to put back the protections that are in Roe v. Wade into law. Since the Supreme Court took it, Congress has the power and ability to pass legislation, to put those protections back in law, and [President] Joe Biden will sign that bill. So, that is what we want.”
Brennan pressed again.
“Does it need to be specific in terms of defining where that guarantee goes up to and where it does not? Which week of pregnancy?”
When Harris again begins to talk about the importance of putting back the “protections” of Roe v. Wade, Brennan tells her, “You know why I’m asking you this question, though. Republicans say the lack of a precise date in cutting it off, you know this, they say that allows Democrats to perform abortions up until birth, which is statistically not accurate.”
“Which is ridiculous!” Harris exclaimed. “It’s ridiculous, and it’s a mischaracterization of the point.”
“Do we need to be more precise?” Brennan pressed.
“I am being precise,” Harris insisted, before again stressing about reinstating the “protections of Roe v. Wade.”
Brennan even asked Harris about GOP proposals—specifically, that of Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to protect unborn babies at 15 weeks. Harris again insisted on focusing on Roe v. Wade.
Graham weighed in Sunday on her remarks.
“This is truly breaking news,” he said. “Vice President Harris today said the idea that Democrats support abortion on demand, up to the moment of birth, is ‘ridiculous.’”
Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany also slammed the vice president’s remarks on social media, tweeting, “Vice President Kamala Harris refuses to say at what week a baby should be protected by law. Watch this exchange. Should it be when a baby feels pain? When a baby has a heartbeat? Birth? She will not say.”
The pro-life organization Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America also weighed in.
“No surprise that Harris refuses to list any specific week or limits on abortion. “NARAL, Planned Parenthood (multimillion dollar donors to Dems) openly support no limits on abortion. Are they wrong @KamalaHarris?”
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Daily Signal.
