House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is back on the baseball field nearly one year after he was tragically shot at a GOP congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

Scalise’s colleague, Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona, tweeted a photo Wednesday of Scalise throwing a baseball in a full uniform. The photo shows Scalise’s cane in the dirt, which he still uses nearly one year after he was shot by James Hodgkinson at a practice for an annual congressional baseball game.

As well as tweeting the photo, Flake said seeing Scalise back on the field “does my heart good.” The shooting took place on June 14, 2017. After a year of recovery, Scalise is back on the field throwing the ball with his colleagues.

Scalise responded to the photo in a tweet, saying, “Feels good to be back with the team!”

Scalise spent several weeks fighting for his life and battling multiple infections at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Six weeks after the shooting, he was transferred to a Washington, D.C., rehabilitation center, where he was for several months.
