Former two-time NFL All-Pro center Matt Birk voiced his support for the pro-life movement with the rest of his family at the March for Life rally in January.
The former Minnesota Viking told the crowd of thousands that if you can’t explain an idea or a concept to a third-grader, “either you don’t understand the idea or it’s not a good idea.”
“You can’t explain abortion to an 8-year-old, it doesn’t make any sense,” he added.
Birk described the heated abortion debate as a “war,” but that it is not against pro-choicers, because “they are our brothers and sisters” and they are “children of God.”
Instead it is a war against the “evil of abortion,” he said.
“I would tell someone that I care about, ‘I don’t want you to have an abortion because it would prevent you from experiencing the fullness of joy that God has for your life,’” Birk said.
Birk believes the debate over abortion can be civil and advocates everyone “remember to come from a place of love and compassion” because people who are pro-choice have “bought into the [pro-choice] lies.”
In keeping with the theme for this year’s March for Life—“Love Saves Lives”—Birk concluded, “We need to show them [pro-choicers] love because love saves lives.”
