Democrats’ Communism Might Drive Bill Maher to Vote for Vance

A long-time Democrat said he might vote for Vice President JD Vance in the 2028 election because he doesn’t want to live in “communist America.”

Comedian and HBO show host Bill Maher sat down for an interview with ABC News on Sunday following his reception of the 2026 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, and the political commentator was blunt about his dislike for the socialist wing of the Democratic Party.

“So, I’m not living in communist America,” Maher said. “I mean, I know the talking point is, ‘It’s not communism, it’s socialism.’ OK, I’ve read the quotes from the [Democratic Socialists of America] platform from their own mouths. Don’t tell me I’m not seeing what I am seeing.”

The Democratic Socialists of America’s aim for the government to control more is just communism under a different name, according to Maher.

“And DSA, again, they say things like, you know, ‘takeover of key industries’—that’s communism,” Maher said.

The “Workers Deserve More” program launched by the Democratic Socialists of America on July 14 has a webpage dedicated to imagining “A Day Without Capitalism.” One of the first things it lists as part of the socialist program is government responsibility for living necessities.

“Food, education, energy, medicine, and transportation aren’t for-profit businesses; they are common goods and utilities,” the page states. 

‘Socialism’? Just a Cover for Communism

Left-wing media has repeatedly criticized President Donald Trump for using the terms “socialism” and “communism” interchangeably.

After the president identified communism as a rising enemy of American freedom in his speech on July 3 at Mount Rushmore, he received pushback for trotting out “the C-word,” as a Fortune article called it.

CNN White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins corrected the president in her Friday night show following his speech and said that democratic socialism “is not communism.” Likewise, The Associated Press published a fact check citing “experts” who said Trump’s claims that Democrats support communism are “off base.”

While Maher has expressed growing dissatisfaction with the woke left of the Democratic Party over the years, he has by no means been in agreement with Trump. 

Trump posted about having dinner with Maher at the White House in February and called him a “highly overrated LIGHTWEIGHT,” expressing frustration that Maher continued with anti-Trump statements even after their dinner.

But he’s joining Trump in calling the DSA a communist group.

Long-Time Dem Voter Considers GOP

In fact, despite Maher’s disagreements with the current president, he’s willing to consider voting red if the only alternative is, as he called it, communism.

He previously told Vance, when the vice president was a guest on his show “Real Time with Bill Maher,” that if the Democratic Party continued with “Jew hating” and socialism, he might vote Republican.

“If this is where they’re going, my vote is in play,” Maher said.

ABC’s co-anchor of the show “This Week,” Jonathan Karl, directly asked if Maher could see himself voting for Vance, and Maher further clarified his previous statement.

“Yes. If this is the Democratic side, yes,” Maher answered. “That’s what I was saying to him. What does ‘my vote’s in play’ mean?”

While the socialist wing is having great success in primary elections, the utopian worldview of socialism is driving Maher away.

“Every day I read about a new person in Colorado or Wisconsin, somebody who is saying some variation of not ‘defund the police’—abolish the police. No prisons, no police. Like, what world do they think we could possibly live in under these conditions?” Maher said.

Maher said he’s grateful he decided to be open when he disagreed with views upheld by the Democratic Party.

“It’s just a level of nutty that I’m so glad that whenever it was, I was like, ‘No, I’m not going along because this is where it ends,’” Maher said.
