DNC Speakers Compensate for ‘Anti-Parent’ Accusations with Emphasis on Family

Speakers at the Democratic National Convention emphasized what they consider “pro-family” positions following accusations from the Right that the Harris-Walz ticket is the most “anti-parent” ticket in history.

“Our kids deserve better than Tim Walz and Kamala Harris,” Moms for Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice told The Daily Signal. “They deserve representatives in the White House who will stand up for the right of parents to direct the upbringing of their children and care about the safety and education of every American child.”

Walz and Harris have “absolutely no respect for parents,” Justice told The Daily Signal.

In a seeming attempt to quash such allegations, Democrats at the DNC in Chicago this week have touted allegedly pro-family policy positions like abortion, access to in vitro fertilization treatments, support for LBGTQ+ children, and keeping explicit LBGTQ+ books in school libraries.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth said Republican nominee Donald Trump would ban abortion and IVF, though Trump has said he will leave abortion limitations to the states and that he supports IVF.

Referring to keeping IVF legal, the Illinois Democrat said Harris, not Trump, believes all Americans should be able to be parents, “to be called mommy or daddy without being treated like a criminal.”

Former President Barack Obama praised his wife Michelle’s mother, his own grandmother, Harris’ parents, and Walz’s parents before saying everyone should have the “freedom” to make decisions about their families.

“We believe that true freedom gives each of us the right to make decisions about our own life—how we worship, what our family looks like, how many kids we have, who we marry,” Obama said.

On Night One of the convention, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Harris knows “it takes a village” to raise a child.

“We have to fight for Kamala as she will fight for us,” Clinton said. “Because you know what? It still takes a village to raise a family, heal a country, and win a campaign.”

Second gentleman Doug Emhoff said his kids call Harris “Momala,” using his DNC speech to paint himself as a doting husband and Harris as a loving mother who cooks dinner for her family and will drop everything to pick up a call from her stepchildren.

“She’s always been there for our children,” Emhoff said, “and I know she’ll always be there for yours, too.”

Yet Emhoff’s promise that Harris will “be there” for American children is unlikely to assuage the concerns of parents who want to raise their own children according to their own moral and religious beliefs.

Harris and Walz hail from California and Minnesota, respectively—states with some of the most radically anti-parent laws in the country, where schools can help children “change” their gender without their parents’ knowledge of consent.

Walz signed a “transgender trafficking” law in May 2023, which allows kids to travel to Minnesota and receive “transgender” medical interventions without parental knowledge or consent.

And the Biden-Harris administration supported a federal Title IX rule change allowing biological males to play girls sports and use girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms in schools and colleges, a policy many parents and girls say makes them uncomfortable.

Democrats seemed to think praising their own parents and establishing Harris and Walz as good parents would make other parents forget how much a Harris-Walz administration would expand government intervention into how they raise their own kids. But parents will not be fooled, mom of four Justice tells The Daily Signal.

“Parents know what is best for their kids, and we see through the false platitudes of the radical policies that Harris and Walz support,” Justice said.
