To coincide with Tax Day today, The Daily Signal describes the very beginnings of taxes and forecasts future chances at reform.
In 1913, Congress adopted the 16th Amendment, which enacted the national income tax.
Since then, the tax code has only been modified a few times.
But now, Americans want change.
According to a recent Pew Research poll, a majority of Americans agree that Congress needs to make major changes to fix the current tax system.
However Americans are divided on what a “fair” tax system would look like.
Tax reform remains a complicated issue, and with political gridlock in Washington, the prospects of bipartisan tax reform remain slim.
