VIDEO: South Carolina Man Reacts to HealthCare.gov Privacy Breach

On Friday evening, Tom Dougall of South Carolina had a voicemail from a stranger named Justin in North Carolina saying he received a document on HealthCare.gov with Dougall’s personal information.

“Initially, I was concerned because I didn’t know if this was some guy who was scamming me or if in fact this was a guy who really had my personal information,” Dougall said in an interview.

Dougall contacted WMBF News in Myrtle Beach, SC, as well as Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Tim Scott (R-SC), and Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC) after realizing his security had truly been threatened.

After connecting with Justin Hadley, whose story first broke on The Foundry this weekend, Dougall learned that Hadley had received a notice about his marketplace eligibility with downloadable letters addressed to Dougall.

Hadley provided Dougall with screenshots from the website and copies of the PDF.

“We’re told constantly that it’s a secure system and it’s not, obviously,” Dougall said. He explained when he contacted representatives for HealthCare.gov, operators had no procedure on how to handle security breaches.
