Jim DeMint: GOP Lawmakers Have ‘Not Stood Up to President Obama’

Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint criticized Republican politicians in an interview Sunday, saying they hadn’t stood firm on conservative principles.
“The things that were mainstay 10 years ago—balancing the budget and limited government and getting rid of cronyism—is now called radical, far right by Republican leadership in Washington,” DeMint, the former South Carolina senator, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
“I know we, along with millions and millions of Americans, are just frustrated that this Republican Party has not stood up to President Obama for his whole term in office,” he added.
“Every issue becomes a fight. Every year we’re fighting about just some reasonable reductions in the growth of spending and standing up to Obama.”
Noting that the federal fiscal year ends in two weeks, DeMint said leadership had been largely quiet about the next year’s budget.
“Have you heard anything from any of the leadership in Washington about what we’re going to do here at the end of the year?” he said. “How can you build support for something if you won’t lay out a plan and let people know that this is what we stand for and this is what we’re going to fight for?”
