Why 12,000 Rallied in Times Square Against Iran Nuke Deal
Genevieve Wood /
I had the honor of representing The Heritage Foundation this week at a “Stop Iran Now” rally in New York City’s Times Square. Over 12,000 people filled seven city blocks. They say it was one of the largest demonstrations ever held in Times Square.
There’s nothing like the fear of a nuclearized Iran and Middle East to bring together so many people from across the political, religious and cultural spectrum to stand in opposition to President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran.
Others addressing the crowd included liberal Harvard law professor Alan Dershowtiz,, former Republican Congressman Allen West, Steven Emerson of the Investigative Project on Terrorism, actor Tony Lobianco of “The French Connection” fame, Fox News commentator Monica Crowley, former CIA director James Woolsey and several former military and political leaders.
Obama may believe that any deal with Iran is better than no deal…
He may believe that terrorist regimes that chant “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” really don’t mean it…
He may believe that a deal that is “temporary” will permanently keep Iran from building nuclear weapons once the ban is lifted…
He may believe that a deal that leaves Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and ballistic missile program largely in place will somehow make Iran a more peaceful nation…
He may believe it’s okay to give billions of dollars in sanctions relief to the Iranian regime even though he admits that doing so means they will have more money to funnel to terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah…
He may believe that this deal will not accelerate the creation of a nuclearized Middle East as Iran’s Arab neighbors ask why they shouldn’t get the same deal Iran has been given…
He may believe that an agreement that went from inspections “anytime, anywhere” to “sometimes, some places” and makes it easy for Iran to hide many of its military sites from such inspections is acceptable…
He may believe that giving Iran a 24-day notice before sending in inspectors is not enough time for Iran to hide, obstruct and deceive…
He may believe that Iran, despite its storied history of not doing so, will keep all its promises to follow this agreement…
Obama may believe history is no teacher. He may believe we can trust Iran.
But we the American people know better—and we don’t believe hat this is a good deal for America or for the rest of the world.
What Obama has “negotiated” is not an arms control agreement—it is unconditional surrender.
Members of Congress who vote to approve this deal are ignoring the facts, ignoring Iran’s history, ignoring their oath to protect the national interests of the United States of America and ignoring the voices of the American people they were elected to represent.
As I said to those assembled in Times Square, politicians often don’t see the light until they feel the heat. An informed and vocal electorate is just the kind of heat that is needed to get members of Congress to do the right thing.
The Iranian people may not have a voice—but we do. Let’s use it.
