Former Congressman on Rand Paul: ‘Has Done Things I Haven’t Seen a Republican Candidate Do’
David Brody /
LOUISVILLE, Ky.—J.C. Watts , the former Oklahoma congressman, was on hand today for Sen. Rand Paul’s big announcement that he’s running for president.
Watts, the college quarterback turned GOP lawmaker, is endorsing the Kentucky Republican and told The Daily Signal in an interview: “I can surely tell you that he has done things that I have not seen a Republican candidate do since Jack Kemp.”
So what is Watts talking about?
There are a myriad of issues, but Watts sees Paul as a guy who’s especially talking to African-American audiences about the Fifth Amendment’s call for due process under the law.
“He’s taken it much further than most Republicans … There’s a justice side to balance out the righteousness side … Most Republicans don’t do that because they’re afraid of getting voted off the island.”
