Exclusive Interview: Ted Cruz on How to Win the Defund Obamacare Debate
Rachel Taylor /
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) believes the most important battle facing this Congress is defunding Obamacare.
He visited Heritage this week to send a message to the grassroots: Conservatives cannot win this battle without the tremendous support from Americans who oppose President Obama’s health-care law.
“The only way we win this fight is if the grassroots rise up and demand of our elected representatives that they stand up and do the right thing,” he told a packed briefing of journalists and bloggers.
Cruz delivered the remakes and took questions at The Bloggers Briefing, then chatted with Heritage’s Jackie Anderson during a sit-down interview.

Cruz believes that by mobilizing a “grassroots army,” he can persuade enough members of Congress to defund Obamacare.
“We have to make it riskier to do the wrong thing than it is to do the right thing,” Cruz explained.
Cruz noted that during Obama’s campaign for gun control, Americans responded in droves. As a result, many in Congress stood in support of the Second Amendment.
He cautioned that defunding Obamacare won’t be an easy fight. Many establishment Republicans are opposed to the idea, preferring instead to take what Cruz called “empty, symbolic” votes for repealing the health-care law.
“At the end of the day,” Cruz told those gathered at Heritage, “this is the right thing to do and the principled thing to do.”
