While nations around the world are working hard to enhance economic freedom, America’s score in the 2016 Index of Economic Freedom continues to slip. With economic freedom diminishing in eight of the past nine years, the U.S. tied its worst score ever in 2016 and remains mired in the ranks of the “mostly free.”

It is high time to practice what we preach when it comes to economic freedom in the United States. With that in mind, experts at The Heritage Foundation have compiled a new supplemental product for 2016, “Economic Freedom in America.” It serves as a much needed scorecard for the nation, as eroding economic freedom threatens growth and prosperity.

Kevin Brady, R-Texas, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and keynote speaker of the official release of the 2016 Index of Economic Freedom, said it best: “Lower taxes, smaller government and freedom to trade will better the lives of all Americans. … ‘We are number 11’ is not the motto of this great nation.”

With recommendations in all aspects of economic freedom, including rule of law, government size, regulatory efficiency, and open markets, “Economic Freedom in America” can be used at all levels of government to promote policies that protect freedom and safeguard well-being.
