NASHUA, N.H.—Sen. Ted Cruz said America is craving new leadership during his speech at the First in the Nation Summit in New Hampshire today.
The Texas Republican, who announced his presidential campaign last month, began his remarks by praising his rivals for the Republican nomination as “an incredible array of conservative leaders.”
Later, he shared the story of his father who fled tyranny in Cuba for the “promise” of America.
“That is the miracle of America,” said Cruz. “That no nation in the history of the world has allowed so many millions of people to come with nothing and achieve anything. And it’s why we will turn this country around.”
Cruz said there are “three simple steps to reigniting the promise of America.”
The first step is economic growth and regulatory reform by instituting a “simple flat tax, so that every American can fill out his or her taxes on a postcard,” and abolishing the IRS.
“The most important regulatory reform: We need to repeal every word of Obamacare,” said Cruz.
The second step is “defending our constitutional liberties—all of them.”
Cruz cited threats on a variety of amendments to the Constitution, including the 10th Amendment.
“We need to defend the 10th Amendment,” said Cruz. “Or as President Obama likes to call it, the what?”
The third step is “restoring America’s leadership in the world.”
Cruz said the next president would have to “destroy radical Islamic terrorism,” stand “unapologetically” with Israel and prevent the Iranians from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Cruz said he believes that “passion and energy” is on the GOP’s side as 2016 approaches.
