As the nation observes the 40th anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s resignation over the Watergate scandal, Daily Signal senior contributor Sharyl Attkisson weighed in on how the infamous scandal would have played out should it have occurred today.
“I think we’ve gone backward since that time when we really felt empowered as journalists, and I like to think of what would happen today during a Nixon-type scandal,” Attkisson said on ABC’s “This Week.”
The investigative reporter and author of the book “Stonewalled: One Reporter’s Fight for Truth in Obama’s Washington,” said Nixon likely would refuse to turn over the tape recordings of his Oval Office conversations to Congress, aides would refuse to testify before congressional investigators or plead the Fifth, and journalists Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward — the Washington Post reporters who broke the story of Watergate — would be “controversialized” on social media by special and political interests.
