Washington – Congressman Kevin McCarthy warned of balooning federal deficits at the Conservative Bloggers’ Briefing today at the Heritage Foundation.

“How do you tell future generations that we are going to be able to compete with India and China? How do you tell future generations that they will be better off than we are, if you strangle-hold this debt upon them?” he said, predicting that the debates on President Obama’s extraordinarybudget proposal will focus on this issue.

The budget being proposed by the administration lays seeks unprecedented post WWII spending increases. Democrats and Republicans alike are unsettled by the sheer amount of spending.

“One thing that you do when you lay out a long term budget is you lay out the long term future of America,” said McCarthy, who spoke about the need for fundamental shifts in the way America views spending and the role of government. “If we change the behavior and the structure of America that we’re going to go into debt, then the behavior will be different. If we change the structure that we become a welfare state, that people are living more off gevernment than providing into it, then we’re changing what has made us great in the long run.”

“Overall, the President’s budget represents a sharp break from the policies that created the most prosperous 25-year period in American economic history. Instead, it puts politicians in charge of an increasing portion of the economy,” said Heritage’s Brian Riedl, a budget expert.
