Washington in a Flash: Boehner Goes Back to the Drawing Board

With the Obama administration’s debt deadline less than a week away, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) is reworking his two-stage debt plan after the Congressional Budget Office revealed it cut less than advertised. The House isn’t expected to vote until Thursday or Friday. Meanwhile, conservatives remain highly suspicious. Heritage Action announced its opposition to the original Boehner plan and Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) doubted it would pass the House.

Rep. Tim Walz (D-MN) will be stopping by Heritage this morning for an event, “Beyond the Border: The Future of the National Guard in Homeland Security.” Walz will be joined by an expert panel to discuss the significant military role of the National Guard. The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to noon ET. It will be webcast.

Heritage and the Pioneer Institute for Public Policy Research are co-hosting a discussion on national education standards. With unprecedented federal overreach, the Common Core State Standards Initiative has been criticized for the quality of the content of standards, entanglement with federal incentives and a disregard for state educational authority. Texas Commissioner of Education Robert Scott will be at the event, which starts at 12:30 p.m. ET. Watch it live online.
